Letters 1901-1909

Compiled by Adolf Leisen, Jürgen Vorderstemann

2013

The correspondence between the painter Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) and the lawyer and writer Wilhelm Wittmann (1881-1920) bears witness to a friendship between their youth between 1899 and 1910. Unfortunately, only Purrmann’s letters to Wittmann have survived. They offer an exciting insight into the early years of the painter, who through this friendship gained access to a world that was new to him, characterized by education, literature and intellectual debate. The letters make it clear how intensively Purrmann strives for artistic perfection, who he meets in this early phase and what shapes him. They also contain new insights into the painter’s early work and document the coloring of the period around 1900 in Germany. The life and work of the writer Wittmann, who is also a talented draughtsman, is presented.
