The artist Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) studied in Karlsruhe and Munich, including together with Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky under Franz von Stuck. However, he first found his own style in Berlin and later in his adopted home of Paris as a student and friend of Henri Matisse. This is characterized by a closeness to nature, the German Impressionism of Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt, and especially by his admired role model Paul Cézanne and his artist friend Henri Matisse.

Hans Purrmann is best known for his still lifes, portraits, nudes and, in particular, colorful landscapes flooded with Mediterranean light. His works are characterized by a special feeling for colouristic subtleties, balanced contrasts and atmosphere. The artist, who was ostracized by the National Socialists as degenerate, headed the German Artists’ Foundation Villa Romana in Florence from 1935 to 1943.

A selection of his works from various creative periods will be shown in the Bitburg exhibition. The loans come from renowned museums and private collections.

Further information can be found here.

The exhibition catalog published by the Dr. Hanns Simon Foundation will be presented at the vernissage.
