Hans Purrmann and Willibald Gänger
An exchange of letters about the art and culture of the 1950s

Sören Fischer (ed.)

After 1945, Hans Purrmann promoted the newly awakening art and cultural life in the Palatinate with great commitment. An important contact for him was the SPD politician and managing director of the Palatinate Secession, Willibald Gänger. Their correspondence from 1950-1960 is now available for the first time. The letters, supplemented by six source texts, provide information about Purrmann’s involvement in the plans of the Palatinate Secession and describe his relationship with fellow painter Rolf Müller-Landau. With many sideways glances at Purrmann’s networking with post-war culture as well as projects of the Deutscher Künstlerbund and the then virulent dispute between abstraction and representationalism, they form a valuable addition to an understanding of the art of the 1950s. The publication was produced in close cooperation with the Hans Purrmann Archive, Munich.
