Paths to Hans Purrmann (1880-1966). Expression and Color – International Symposium

Hans Purrmann (1880-1966), a painter from the Palatinate, developed over the course of his life into an artist of European stature. The scientific documentation of his extensive oeuvre was completed in 2014.
On the occasion of the upcoming 50th anniversary of his death, the Chair of Art History at the University of Regensburg, in collaboration with the Hans Purrmann Foundation and the Purrmann Archive, is organizing
Munich, which will discuss new research on Purrmann’s life and work at an international level and, with the participation of renowned authors, bring it together in a volume of essays. The resulting publication also builds on an existing tradition of commemorative publications on Purrmann’s death in 1966: Reden über Purrmann appeared in 1996. In 2006, a comprehensive exhibition of paintings and watercolors was held at the Kunsthalle Tübingen – based on the catalog raisonné of the paintings. The only monograph to date was published in 1950, while the artist (Edmund Hausen) was still alive.
As part of the symposium, renowned art historians will shed light on Hans Purrmann’s life and creative phases in their respective historical contexts, focusing on his major works. His varied life lends itself to such an examination: The
The artist lived in Munich, Berlin and Paris, which were important art centers at the beginning of the 20th century, and later in Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland. The not always voluntary changes of location were not only significant for his artistic practice, they also made Purrman a recipient of and participant in a wide variety of cultural and artistic circles. Special consideration will be given to the realization of the symposium and the subsequent
Publication, the evaluation of the extensive sources in the Purrmann Archive in Munich.
